If Moyes really wanted Fellaini, we'd have signed him by now... Fellaini would jump at the move, and 3 weeks ago Everton would have been powerless to refuse a proper bid...

I'm honestly not sure if even Moyes knows what the fuck Woodworm is doing... I wouldn't be surprised if he's not being spun the same pack of lies as the rest of us... "don't worry Dave, it's all under control"... "trust me, I used to be a banker"...
I think Fellaini was always Plan C/D whatever, which is why we're bidding so late. I also think Moyes may have told Everton there was every chance we'd go for him, and he wanted to give his former club the time to find a replacement.

What pisses me off more is the likelihood of us spending say £20m for Fellaini, but not £30/35m for Modric - who would dramatically improve our midfield; not be just another squaddie.

I really really really hope there's a bigger game plan behind this lowball bid....

If there are none this is simply inexcusable incompetence..

Presumably they reckon Everton's too broke to pass it up in the absence of any other bids.

It's kind of amazing that the summer's come to this though, lowballing Everton at the close of the transfer window. Shittest summer ever.

Just pay the money!

What we could get for various amounts of money - all would improve us!

37.5 mill - Fabregas
32.5 mill - Modic
22.5 mill - Fellaini
17.5 mill - Cabaye
12.5 mill - Wanyama

I dunno about Wanyana, I know he was linked with us a few months ago, but the fact his choice of destination seemed to be between Cardiff and Southampton would seem to suggest he's not all that, otherwise surely a bigger club would've been in for him. As for Cabaye, Arsenal have bid £11million for him today and had it rejected, speculation seems to be that Newcastle would want £30million for him.

Maybe what's happening is that Woodward has proven to be so incompetent that Moyes is forced to push for players from his former club, where he knows the situation and can ensure the deal gets done. But in terms of the rumoured bids and timing, the strategy seems sound to me. The club sounded out Everton with a fairly low bid for Baines earlier in the summer and Everton said no. So United waited to see what happened before the expiration of Fellaini's buy-out clause -- if another club had come in for him then maybe we would have outbid them. But the buy-out clause came and went, which is the market saying nobody wants to buy Fellaini for that amount (24M?), so it's only logical to bid less than the buyout clause now. It's now basically a question of how much do Everton need the money? They might have been counting on selling one or both of them this summer, which Moyes would know of course. Which would explain why their press release about this bid is so angry sounding -- there's a good chance they'll end up taking less than they were hoping to get for the players.

FWIW I think Fellaini would be a very useful addition to the squad. Obviously we're not going to build the team around him and he probably would not be a default starter like Carrick. By himself, he's not the rejuvenation of our midfield that we are looking for. But it's indisputable that he's one of the best tacklers and ball-recoverers around, so for those who believe we need a decent defensive midfield battler on the books, I'd like to hear a better option for that job. His all-round game is pretty good too, unlike a lot of specialised defensive midfielders. It might not have been pretty, but I think he deserves a lot of credit for being shoved into an attacking midfield role last season and actually doing pretty well at it in terms of end product, I think that shows good heart.

This is another pointless and suspiciously public bid in the Fabregas mould.

I don't know about you, but I am beyond embarrassed at this point.
