We don't need a perfect 11 and bench either, we only have to better than the opposition, who so far haven't strengthened. Kane and Haaland look to be staying put. The one's with more to offer than last season are Chelsea under Tuchel. They've got a lot of talent that haven't got going in the Prem yet.

I think I'm getting carried away tbh

Aye, Ole is not the man to give us a philosophy like what Liverpool and City have. But do we need it? If we have enough quality on the pitch, we might not need one. That's been the objective post-Fergie, to bring in enough quality and experience that the players can do it themselves. We're nearly there now. Perhaps a top CDM is the final piece of the puzzle.

One interesting development on this is the hiring of Eric Ramsey from Chelsea. We've been shit at set pieces, so they hired a set piece specialist. It's similar to Fergie hiring Meulensteen, cos he felt the technical ability of our squad was poor in relation to other CL clubs. Fergie knew he couldn't improve it, so he got someone in that could.
A philosophy is massively important IMO for a club to be dominant over a long period of time. Fergie imposed his on 3 great teams and we dominated the League for two decades. Ole doesn't seem to have his own, he's harping back to the glory glory days and it's working for now. His plan seems to be to outscore the oppo, which might start working because we have a solid defence and some serious firepower. Get that DM in, fuck Pogba off and I reckon we will be right in the mix.

The appointment of the new coaching staff will be massive and over the next couple of years, I expect us to start playing some modern football. Think there have been 3 new appointments this summer, obvs Ole has been reading our posts on here slagging the coaching off and is doing something about it.

I think you’re being inconsistent there, Sid. On the one hand, you criticize managers who just lump the ball up to the forwards. But then you say we could win without great tactics or a philosophy, just by having better players. But that’s a recipe for just lumping the ball up to our famous forwards and counting on them to do a bit of magic.

It’s definitely better to have good tactics as well as good players. Better results and much better to watch! I think that the Europa League final and the Euro 2020/21 final both showed that tactics matter a lot.

I disagree. For one lumping the ball forwards is a philosophy (one that used to work too). And not having a philosophy doesn't automatically result in that. Madrid didn't have a philosophy for most of their 4 CL wins. Sometimes they pressed, sometimes they didn't, sometimes they kept possession, sometimes they didn't. When they went a goal up, sometimes they sat deep and sought counterattacks. Basically they relied on having enough quality, personality, energy and experience on the pitch (best embodied by Ronaldo who is all that) to win games, which they did in different ways.

I agree about tactics, they're vital. Tactics are not philosophies though. I'm not too sure on Ole's tactics either. I think the thing he's best at is manmanagement. He's got that down to a tee.

OK I see what you mean, philosophy meaning being committed to a certain way of playing. Yeah I agree with you then actually, I don’t mind a manager being pragmatic and flexible, so long as things are still tight in terms of tactics and coaching. Ferguson was that way really.

But it is true that the “philosopher” types have been dominating the sport in recent years. Pep and Klopp took their teams to a really high level, crazy points, around 100 points in the PL. Ferguson didn’t do that, but maybe his way was more sustainable year after year.

Not sure there was a separate thread for awb, but news reports coming out to say he has been charged with driving while disqualified and uninsured in his 200k lambo.

Brain dead. How much of a fucking idiot to you have to be to think you can get away with that in this day and age?

He could literally pay someone 40k a year to be his personal chauffeur 24 hours a day and it would prob cost him a few days wage.

I've got no time for uninsured disqualified drivers flouting the law, the club should have some kind of action on this.
