Ole's vision of signing British talent, exactly when the economics of the PL has hit a new level, is ruinous lunacy. Maguire's solid but not worth £80M. Bissaka's got lots of potential, but at £50M, we're not paying "potential" prices. James looks a good punt for £20M so far. £150M is massive money for just three players who aren't top class, though I grant you Bissaka has the potential to get there.

I've changed my mind on Maguire. Looks great. 80m is a lot, but its better spent than the 70 on Lindelof and Bailly.

If we start spending well we'll be fine. We bought and then sold within two years di Maria, Schneiderlin, Depay, Mkhi, Sanchez, Lukaku and Schweinsteiger with a loss of £100m+. There's a good chance Fred will be added to that list and it's not even including the likes of Rojo and Darmian (and now probably Bailly) who we've kept and even extended their contracts because we couldn't sell them.

The problem with that 4 players each summer thing is first, we already do that and second, usually only one or two work out. Even if they do work out, it's two slow. Sign 8 in one window.

In lieu of proper scouting we should just buy from clubs who obviously know what they're doing - like Salzburg. Goes for managers too.

Sobolev is a unit with a nice touch, could be a canny Plan B at good value:

We kind of are now actually just buying from those clubs that have gone to the bother of hiring a good DoF and making smart signings, like Leicester. Lille, Lyon, Leipzig, Salzburg also seem to regularly unearth gems.

That's Ed's new strategy: rather than hire a top DoF, he's just going to use other clubs DoFs to identify quality players, and then pay over the odds for em. Like we could have had Maguire for 15m 2 years ago.

You could just hire the DoF for a fraction of the cost of a player... but that would be intelligent.

It occurred to me that Woodward's not just not a football man, he's never run any kind company either, has he? I mean, if the Glazers had bought a computer company instead of United, would they not bother having anyone with computer knowledge and experience in top management? It's not even a football thing, they're just gobshites, bunch of bankers.

Three players that might be gettable in January, if the club is willing to make hard to resist offers, are Hakim Ziyech at Ajax, who offers goals and assists from right wing, Bruno Fernandes, and Moussa Dembele, for striker. The three of them would give you a new attack basically. Fernandes and Ziyech would be replacing the likes of Pereira, Lingard, and Mata in the lineup, players who basically offer us nothing. So unless they were Fred-style flops, they could only improve us.

Yeah, he was just an investment banker at JP Morgan. If he'd have run a business you could make a poor argument that he could run a massive football club (as a business). But he's not even done that, which is evident in his terrible business decisions, like the aforementioned of ignoring calls to sign Maguire for 15m by our very own assistant manager, letting Herrera go for free, re-signing Smalling & Jones etc.

Eight players over the next two years is not anywhere near enough. Consider that; Rojo, Jones, Fred and Young are hopefully all gone next summer. Just replacing them takes up one full year of transfers and squad wise we are back at the same level, of course we will be getting Smalling and Sanchez back because no one in dumb enough to actually buy them - so that's like two new signings.

Woodward isn't going to be spend any of the Glazers money for these alleged transfers so they will need to be financed by selling player, with the possible exception of Pogba, I cannot see anyone who would bring in more than their replacement would cost. But of course we have the youth system to fall back on.

This has all the parameters of a death spiral. X_X

Eight years in two years sounds like plenty to me, especially if most of them are intended to be starters. That's most of the outfield team. The challenge is making 8 good signings, that's always been our challenge. Woodward and the rest of them seem to think that their transfer target evaluation is working great now, which seems like premature celebrating to me.

It's just the usual PR damage control shite anyway. If Ole loses the next few matches, it'll be back to the beginning I'm afraid. We'll get in a manager who'll probably decide that Maguire and Bissaka aren't his sort of player :))
