Wind your neck in Mate... it's not my fault if your post suggests something other than what you meant... anyway, even your response is full of nonsense.
Considering who we expect to sign, if anyone, then Gerrard would be better... and saying Hargreaves took a tournament by storm is hilarious, and dips the rest of your post in shit... but just to be thorough... Benitez had Gerrard at his peak, when he still had the legs to be a box to box monster, holding him back as a defensive mid would have been criminal... and Gerrards performance against AC in the Champs league final was the stuff of legend, right up there with Keane v Juventus... when has Carrick EVER taken on a game like that?
The bottom line is this... Gerrard dumps on Carrick... any time, anywhere... and to suggest otherwise is football heresy.
FFS, Benitez did *not* use Gerrard as a box to box monster. He did the exact opposite by relieving him of defensive duties and putting not just a Carrick-style player, Alonso, behind him but also a pure defensive destroyer type in Mascherano. After a while in fact, Benitez didn't even trust Gerrard up top, he started sticking him on the wing, although even I think that's taking things too far.
Don't get me wrong, Gerrard was a great midfielder cum supporting striker type, with a great eye for goal. But he's relatively shite at distribution, relatively shite at retaining possession, and relatively shite at positioning compared to other top midfielders. With him playing the Carrick role for Liverpool and now England, you haven't noticed that it helps make those teams a bit shit?
