Squad
Following your logic, if Mata can't get the number 10 slot he shouldn't be played on the right side of midfield. If Di Maria can't get the number 10 slot he should be dropped instead of playing on the left side of midfield. Blind shouldn't be slotted in to the DM position because he's really a left back. If the Bogbrush isn't first choice for whatever position he's supposed to be good at, he can't be played forward left to nod down balls, like he did for a handful of games. As for Young, he would never have got the chance to be probably our most consistent player last season.
From ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggedy beasties and things that go bump in the night, Good Lord deliver us...and while you're at it, a bit of a helping hand with hobbits wouldn't go amiss...
And while we're on the subject, consider Phillip Lahm. Best left back in the Bundesliga. Moved to right back, where he was best right back in the Bundesliga. Guardiola sees his skill level and plays him as defensive midfield. Okay, not the best in the Bundesliga, but sure as hell not the worst. Point is, the idea that players have to lay a claim to a single role or fuck off to the bench is dark ages thinking.

Rooney's played in midfield quite a few times over the years and he's OK at best there. He's had a few good games occasionally but he's not a top midfielder.
So, Swampy, if we're getting a striker, Rooney must compete for the same role. Just like other players have to for their positions.
Like someone said, Angel Di Maria could move back to midfield. Depay and Young on the wings. Young has earned his place at least.
Di Maria is key next season. If he clicks we'll challenge for the title considering that he's always looking to do the ambitious, creative stuff. We know he'll get us a decent amount of assists even when he's at his worst.

Sure did.redzebs wrote:Did someone just use Philip Lahm as an analogy to compare players playing out of position? Our players? Lahms good though tbf
Lahm is actually a really good example of a player who has shown that fixed ideas about a player's position are bollox. Dottels even.

Dozer - I totally disagree with you.dozer wrote:Rooney's played in midfield quite a few times over the years and he's OK at best there. He's had a few good games occasionally but he's not a top midfielder.

Lets say we get Muller and Schweinsteiger for the sake of an argument. If LVG wants to play 4 3 3 with a false 9, then what is wrong with him trying Di Maria, Muller and Depay on top, with Rooney Schweinsteiger and Herrera in the midfield? Until it's tried you could not know in advance that it would not work. Rooney will always give a 100% and if he is given a clear and consistent role to play in midfield, I personally think he's a good enough footballer to carry it off.

You are over complicating it, just play Rooney as a nine with a decent midfield and good wide men and he'll bang them in.
Or you can just keep getting Phil Jones to take corners.
Well I suppose that's the knighthood fucked.
Who is suitable though? We need a striker who is top-rate, at the right kind of age and, more importantly, available. If we can't find someone that's gonna actually improve us, we'd be better to stick with what we've got. Better that than bring in some mediocre striker who won't bring us anything better.
Edit: Needs to be right price too. Harry Kane, if we really are seriously interested, would cost a ridiculous sum even if we could convince him to come here, and who knows whether he's the real deal or just another one-season wonder? He could be another Rooney, but then again, he could be another Francis Jeffers!
